GLA has been in existence at Plum Senior High School for over fifty years thanks to the thoughtful work from countless GLA members who strive for:  Character, Leadership, Service, Responsibility, and Enthusiasm.  This service club works on several projects per year in helping individuals or groups in need in the Plum Community and beyond.  Some of these include sponsoring four blood drives each year, a fundraiser to support research for the PA Breast Cancer Coalition, Operation Christmas Child, Presents for Patients and various other projects at a few assisted-living facilities within the area, supplies for soldiers, Laird Cemetery upkeep, food pantry supplies, and many others.

During the 2013-2014 School Year, GLA received recognition in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for a Jefferson Award, which is the 'Nobel Peace' prize of volunteer work.  During the 2013-2014 School Year, GLA received recognition in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette from the Jefferson Awards Foundation. This then allowed the group to partake in the Jefferson Awards Foundation's Students in Action Program during the 2014-2015 School Year, which GLA won a Gold Banner for a number of service projects but particularly their efforts to change how students and staff recycle in the school district. Then during the 2015-2016 School Year for GLA's participation in Students in Action, GLA won another Gold Banner and the honor to represent the Pittsburgh Region at the national ceremony in Washington DC for a number of service projects but particularly their efforts to promote school unity at the high school. For the current school year, GLA plans to continue promoting school unity, to produce even more great service projects within our community.

GLA sponsors four blood drives throughout the school year:

  • Tuesday, October 24, 2017
  • Tuesday, December 19, 2017
  • Wednesdayday, February 14, 2018
  • Wednesday, April 18, 2018

All blood drives take place from 8:00am-2:00pm in the Auxiliary Gym at the high school. If interested in becoming a donor, please schedule an appointment by contacting Mrs. Martello. Not only do these blood drives save lives within the community, but they also help raise scholarship money for seniors. At each event, Central Blood Bank will be giving donors a 'Thank You' t-shirt gift for donating beside having snacks and pizza. If you are unable to make these dates during the scheduled time, you can donate at any of Central Blood Bank's locations and give them our school code to have your donation count toward our totals - HS010059. Please consider being a 'Superhero' by helping to 'save three lives' with your donation!
